Trigonotreta was named by Koenig (1825) [Sepkoski's age data: C Step-l P Leon Sepkoski's reference number: 62,538,712].

It was reranked as Spirifer (Trigonotreta) by Meek (1877).

It was assigned to Spirifer by Meek (1877); to Spiriferida by Sepkoski (2002); to Trigonotretini by Waterhouse (2004); and to Trigonotretinae by Williams et al. (2006).
