Taxonomy
Pyrgocystis was named by Bather (1915). It is not extant. Its type is Pyrgocystis sardesoni. It is the type genus of Pyrgocystidae.

It was assigned to Hemicystitidae by Regnéll (1945) and Regnéll (1966); to Isorophida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Pyrgocystidae by Sumrall and Zamora (2011).
