Scarabaeus brunnus was named by Linnaeus (1758). It is extant.

It was recombined as Melolontha brunnea by Fabricius (1775); it was recombined as Serica brunna by Krell (1996); it was misspelled as Scarabaeus brunneus by Müller (1776) and Goeze (1777); it was recombined as Serica brunnea by Green et al. (2006).
