Broilia massiliensis was named by Bergounioux (1936). Its type specimen is UCB-L1 92838 and is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Saint-Henri, which is in a Chattian terrestrial claystone in France.
It was recombined as Mauremys massiliensis by Broin (1977) and Hervet (2004).
