Pomolobus was named by Rafinesque (1820) [Sepkoski's age data: T Ol-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 915]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Clupeidae by Danil'chenko (1960), Danil'chenko (1967), Jerzmanska (1968) and Constantin (1999); and to Clupeiformes by Sepkoski (2002).
