Cancer flammeus was named by Herbst (1794). It is extant.

It was recombined as Calappa flammea by Rathbun (1918), Rathbun (1919), Rathbun (1930), Rathbun (1935), Schweitzer et al. (2010) and Luque et al. (2017).
