Colymbus stellatus was named by Pontoppidan (1763). It is extant.

It was recombined as Gavia stellata by Broughton (2004), Zelenkov et al. (2008), del Hoyo et al. (2014), Clements et al. (2017), Watanabe et al. (2020) and Watanabe et al. (2020).
