Taxonomy
Smilodon was named by Lund (1841) [also said to be 1842]. It is not extant. Its type is Smilodon populator.
It was assigned to Machairodontinae by Hay (1902), Kurten and Anderson (1980) and Zurita et al. (2004); to Felidae by Lund (1841), Cope (1880) and Salles et al. (2006); and to Smilodontini by Kurten (1968), Berta and Galiano (1983), Kurtén and Werdelin (1990), Liu (2005), Slater and Van Valkenburgh (2008) and Wallace and Hulbert (2013).
