Taxonomy
Canis (Epicyon) was named by Leidy (1858) [named as subgenus of Canis by Leidy 1858; mentioned as belonging to Aelurodon by Matthew & Stirton 1930a; apparently no later author discussed the subgenus until Baskin raised it to genus level].
It was synonymized subjectively with Aelurodon by Scott and Osborn (1890); it was reranked as Epicyon by Baskin (1980), Carroll (1988), Wang et al. (1999), Wang et al. (2004), Hulbert and Whitmore (2006) and Wang et al. (2008).
It was assigned to Canis by Leidy (1858); to Canidae by Baskin (1980) and Carroll (1988); to Borophaginae by Hulbert and Whitmore (2006); and to Borophagina by Wang et al. (1999), Wang et al. (2004) and Wang et al. (2008).
