It was synonymized subjectively with Hyracotherium by Hay (1899), Granger (1908), Troxell (1922), Wood (1934), Toohey (1959), Radinsky (1963); it was synonymized subjectively with Eohippus by Hay (1902), Peterson (1919); it was synonymized subjectively with Homogalax by Wood (1927), Colbert and Schoch (1998).
It was assigned to Tapiridae by Scott (1913); to Equoidea by Prothero and Schoch (1989); to Isectolophidae by Cope (1881), Froehlich (1999); and to Tapiromorpha by Froehlich (2002).
