Orthis pogonipensis was named by Hall and Whitfield (1877).

It was recombined as Dalmanella pogonipensis by Schuchert (1897); it was recombined as Pianodema pogonipensis by Bassler (1915); it was recombined as Diparelasma pogonipense by Ulrich and Cooper (1938); it was recombined as Diparelasma pogonipensis by Ross (1968).
