Taxonomy
Hippotragus priscus was named by Arambourg (1979). Its type specimen is No. 1949-6:2, a tooth (M3), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Unit 1 (Slama Stage), Bel Hacel, Algeria - Anderson (1936), which is in a Pliocene marine sandstone in the Slama Formation of Algeria.
