Hataina was named by Huang (1967) [Shell or test simple, a single latticed shell, lentelliptical in outline, with simple shell cavity; shell pores prolonged, cylindrical appear as tubuli; without medullary shell or internal rods, no radial spines preserved; aperture on middle part of oval margin growth unequal in three axes.]. It was considered monophyletic by Huang (1967).

It was assigned to Radiolaria by Huang (1967).
