Vespertilio fuscus was named by Beauvois (1796). It is extant. It is the type species of Eptesicus.
It was recombined as Eptesicus fuscus by Hay (1930), Sherman (1952), Choate and Birney (1968), Kurten and Anderson (1980), Morgan (1994), Rabon et al. (2000), Czaplewski et al. (2005).
