Scymnosaurus was named by Broom (1903). It is not extant. Its type is Scymnosaurus ferox.
It was assigned to Therocephalia by Broom (1913); to Pristerognathidae by Boonstra (1954); and to Scymnosaurinae by Boonstra (1969).
