Stephanium was named by Haeckel (1887) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo R]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Stephaniidae.

It was assigned to Stephaniidae by De Wever et al. (2001); and to Nassellaria by Sepkoski (2002).
