Taxonomy
Goniaster was named by Agassiz (1836). It is extant. It is the type genus of Goniasteridae, Goniasterinae.
It was assigned to Goniasteridae by Forbes (1841); to Atheneidae by Clark and Twitchell (1915); and to Goniasterinae by Spencer and Wright (1966).
