Taxonomy
Spondylus gumanomocon was named by Brown and Pilsbry (1913) [TYPE LOCALITY: Mao Fm, Samba Hills, Guayubin, Dominican Republic. TYPE REPOSITORY: ANSP, Philadelphia. HISTORY: Lectotype designated by Pilsbry 1922 [Vokes and Vokes 1992].]. Its type specimen is ANSP 2869, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil.

Synonyms
  • Spondylus carmenensis was named by Hodson (1927) [TYPE LOCALITY: Venezuela. TYPE REPOSITORY: PRI, New York. HISTORY: Synonym of S. gumanomocon Brown and Pilsbry 1913 [Vokes and Vokes 1992].].

    It was synonymized subjectively with Spondylus gumanomocon by Vokes and Vokes (1992).
