Taxonomy
Holopea was named by Hall (1847) [Sepkoski's age data: O Aren-u C Serp-l Sepkoski's reference number: 797]. It is not extant. Its type is Holopea symmetrica. It is the type genus of Holopeidae.

It was reranked as Macrocheilus (Holopea) by Hall (1859); it was reranked as Cyclonema (Holopea) by Scofield (1897).

It was assigned to Macrocheilus by Hall (1859); to Trochonematidae by Ulrich and Scofield (1897); to Cyclonema by Scofield (1897); to Holopeinae by Knight et al. (1960); to Euomphalina by Sepkoski (2002); and to Holopeidae by Gischler et al. (2004) and Bouchet et al. (2005).
