Cerithiopsis was named by Hanley (1849) [Sepkoski's age data: K Coni R]. It is extant. Its type is Murex tubercularis.
It was assigned to Cerithiidae by Nagao (1928) and Turner (1938); to Cerithiadae by Weisbord (1962); to Cerithiopsinae by Hoerle (1972); to Neotaenioglossa by Sepkoski (2002); and to Cerithiopsidae by Martin (1904), Durham (1944), Gardner (1948), Allison (1955), Rivera (1957), MacNeil (1960), Addicott (1970), Ladd (1972), Squires (1984), Wienrich (2001), Darragh (2017) and Schnetler et al. (2024).
