USGS loc. 14983 (Carboniferous of the United States)

Also known as Colln. E779

Where: Shasta County, California (40.8° N, 122.3° W: paleocoordinates 2.4° N, 53.8° W)

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Baird Formation, Mississippian (358.9 - 323.2 Ma)

• The contact between the Baird and the underlying Bragdon Fm. can be seen at the upper limit of the platy shale. This may be a disconformity, but it is difficult to tell. The thickness of the Baird is also unknow due to faulting and poor outcrops.

• group of beds-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: marine; black, green, cherty/siliceous mudstone and limestone

• The stratigraphy of this area suggests that volcanism was dominant during the early and late Baird. Marine sedimentation was dominant the remainder of the time. This environment was probably a sea dotted with volcanoes.
• The Baird Fm, consists mainly of pyroclastic rocks interbedded with tuffaceous sandstone, mudstone, and mafic flows in the lower part; sliaceous mudstone and minor amounts of limestone, chert, and tuff in the middle part; and greenstone in the upper part. The formation is intruded in many places by tabular bodies of mafic quartz diorite. The pyroclastic rocks are mostly greenish-gray to greenish-black volcanic breccia, tuff breccia, and tuff. The tuffaceous sandstone forms beds 10ft. thick and is interlayered with tuff and mudstone. Mudstone comprises 25-30% of the rocks in the Baird Fm., it forms in beds 4-12inches thick. About 50% of the limestone in the outcrop has been replaced by chert

Size class: macrofossils
