Schwandorf, Tagebaue Brueckelholz, BR-OF/S (Miocene of Germany)

Also known as Tagebaue Brueckelholz, Sandy layers

Where: Bayern, Germany (49.4° N, 12.2° E: paleocoordinates 49.6° N, 10.5° E)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Burdigalian (20.4 - 16.0 Ma)

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: fluvial; unlithified sandstone and unlithified lignite

• Fossils are recovered from a small river within the "Ur-Naab" drainage. This is incised into Triassic bedrock. The channels are a few 10s of meters deep and 1-2 km wide. They vary considerably both laterally and vertically. The Brueckelholz channel includes pure sands, coals, mixed sands and coals, and "paper-thin, grey, diatomaceous, leaf coals" bespeaking great changes in flow regime.
• The two beds at Brueckelholz are a "Sandy Coal" which appears intercalated with a coal bed. These are overlain by the sands which contain the present flora. No mention of colors are made in the text. I remember the sands as light in color.
