USGS Loc. 8854, 8855, 8856, 10461 - A.L. Parrish Farm [Suwannee Lmst] (Oligocene of the United States)

Also known as USGS Loc. 12723, 12723, 13857

Where: Washington County, Florida (30.6° N, 85.6° W: paleocoordinates 30.8° N, 79.3° W)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Suwannee Limestone Formation, Early/Lower Oligocene (33.9 - 28.4 Ma)

• The section at this place revealed the existence of two beds. The lower bed consists of limestone composed almost entirely of large foraminifera but without observed mollusks. The upper bed contains molds of mollusks. There has been much slumping of the strata surrounding the sink, thus it is difficult to determine the original position of the upper bed, but it appears to be near the top of the section. The taxonomic list for this collection is restricted to the fauna of the upper bed. No unconformity is present between beds.

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: marine; lithified, argillaceous limestone

• several descriptions are in the paper from previous works: (1) cream-white soft limestone; (2) a lower white, finely granular, apparently pure limestone with few fossils and an upper limestone that is more argillaceous and carries an abundany fauna; and (3) the lower bed consists of a soft, white limestone composed almost entirely of large foraminifera but without observed mollusks. The upper bed contains molds of mollusks.

Size classes: macrofossils, microfossils

Preservation: cast, mold/impression

Reposited in the USGS

• Some foraminifera were identified in the sediments of the upper bed at this locality, but not all were identified to the genus level.
