Buschberg NE Niederleis - sample 2 (section A) (Miocene of Austria)

Where: Austria (48.6° N, 16.4° E: paleocoordinates 48.1° N, 16.1° E)

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Badenian (13.7 - 12.7 Ma)

• STRATIGRAPHIC RELATIONS: Overlying Karpatian sediments, but also regionally overlying Paleocene-Jurassic basement rock. THICKNESS: Sampled horizon of ~10 cm within approximately 17 m thick composite section (composed of ~3 m thick pits. AGE: Early Badenian, Lower Lagenid froam biozone, NN5, M5 planktic foram biozone, lower Langhian. STRATIGRAPHIC POSITION: From near base of section, in Balanid/molluck - siltclay.

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: offshore; unlithified, medium-grained, shelly/skeletal, argillaceous, silty sandstone

• ENVIRONMENT: Water depth not exceeding 100 m, proximal strom deposition, within the inner shelf area. Balanids indicate presence of abundant littoral hard substrata; relatively deep water sediments at only 200 m distance from paleoshore indicates the presence of a drowned paleocliff. SEQUENCE STRATIGRAPHY: Highstand conditions at this time within Vienna Basin.
• SPECIFIC LITHOLOGY: Medium sand to silt/clay, bearing skeletal material. LITHIFICATION: Unlithified, based on description.

Size class: macrofossils

Collected by Mandic, Harzhauser, Spezzaferri, Zuschin

Collection methods: bulk, peroxide, sieve,

• METHODS: Collections soaked and sieved (1mm). REPOSITORY: Either University of Wien (Vienna), or Museum of Natural History (NHMW).
