Morotopithecus was named by Gebo et al. (1997). It is not extant. Its type is Morotopithecus bishopi.
It was synonymized subjectively with Afropithecus by Pickford et al. (2003), Harrison and Andrews (2009).
It was assigned to Hominoidea by Gebo et al. (1997); and to Proconsulidae by Zalmout et al. (2010).
