Trematosauridae was named by Watson (1919). Its type is Trematosaurus. It was considered monophyletic by Schoch (2013).
It was assigned to Stereospondyli by Haughton (1925) and Kuhn (1946); to Stereospondyli by Watson (1919) and Damiani and Rubidge (2003); and to Trematosauroidea by Säve-Söderbergh (1935), Kuhn (1971), Carroll (1988), Welles (1993), Schoch and Milner (2000), Yates and Warren (2000), Schoch (2006), Schoch (2013) and Fortuny et al. (2017).
