Mesophthiridae was named by Gao et al. (2019). Its type is Mesophthirus.

It was considered an invalid subgroup of Coccoidea by Grimaldi and Vea (2021); it was reranked as the subfamily Mesophthirinae by Shcherbakov (2022).

It was assigned to Insecta by Gao et al. (2019); to Xylococcidae by Shcherbakov (2022); and to Neoptera by Gao et al. (2022).
