Taxonomy
Ponera fuliginosa was named by Heer (1849). It is an impression. Its type locality is Radoboj (Grätz Collection), which is in a Sarmatian lagoonal/restricted shallow subtidal limestone in Croatia.

It was recombined as Aphaenogaster fuliginosa by Pongrácz (1931); it was recombined as Poneropsis fuliginosa by Heer (1867), Taylor (1964), Bolton (2012).
