Pteronura was named by Gray (1837). It is extant.

It was reranked as Lutra (Pteronura) by Nehring (1900).

It was assigned to Lutra by Nehring (1900); to Lutrini by Willemsen (1992) and Pickford (2007); and to Lutrinae by Marmi et al. (2004), Prevosti and Ferrero (2008) and Law et al. (2018).
