Nettion was named by Kaup (1829) [usually treated as a subgenus of Anas]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Anatidae by Brodkorb (1958); and to Anatinae by Hay (1930), Wetmore (1940), Brodkorb (1964), Howard (1972).
