Taxonomy
Caryophyllia conulus was named by Phillips (1829). It is not extant.

It was recombined as Turbinolia conulus by Michelin (1841); it was recombined as Paratrochocyathus conulus by Turnsek et al. (2003); it was recombined as Trochocyathus conulus by Milne-Edwards and Haime (1850), Fromentel (1859), Löser (2010).
