Favia gregoryi was named by Wells (1935). Its type locality is Spring Mount [Yellow Limestone Gp], which is in a Lutetian shallow subtidal limestone in Jamaica.
It was recombined as Ovalastrea gregoryi by Baron-szabo (2002).
