Diagnosis
ReferenceDiagnosis
H. Ichishima et al. 2017Africanacetus differs from all other Hyperoodontinae in having unique combination of characters as follows: 1) the dome-like rostral maxillary crest extending onto the supraorbital process of frontal, which slopes gradually toward the lateral margin of the orbit; 2) the nasal process of the premaxilla constricted ventral to the premaxillary crest; 3) the premaxillary crests significantly asymmetrical in size, the right being much larger than the left; 4) the premaxillary crest being thick and posterolaterally directed; 5) between the maxilla and the nasal the posterior projection of the premaxilla contacts the frontal on the vertex; 6) proportionally large nasals, by which the premaxillary crests are widely separated; 7) right nasal significantly larger than the left; 8) the anterior margin of nasal, which does not extend anteriorly beyond the anterior margin of the premaxillary crest; 9) presence of a foramen at the back of the premaxillary crest at the boundary between the maxilla and the premaxilla, which might be called, as discussed later, the posterior accessory foramen, the intra-premaxillary foramen, or the additional dorsal infraorbital foramen; 10) a distinct maxillary tubercle separating the antorbital notch from the prominential notch; 11) the mesorostral groove completely filled by the vomer, which is more elevated than the premaxilla over its complete length; 12) the rostrum higher than wide; and 13) the rostrum with vestigial alveolar groove.
