Leptopleuroninae was named by Ivakhnenko (1979). It is not extant. Its type is Leptopleuron. It was considered monophyletic by Modesto and Damiani (2007), Säilä (2008).
It was assigned to Procolophonidae by Small (1997), Sues et al. (2000), Modesto et al. (2002), Modesto and Damiani (2003), Cisneros and Schultz (2003), Modesto and Damiani (2007), Säilä (2008), Sues and Reisz (2008), Saila (2010), Butler et al. (2023), Silva-Neves et al. (2024).
