Pycinasterinae was named by Spencer and Wright (1966). It is not extant. Its type is Pycinaster.

It was reranked as the family Pycinasteridae by Breton and Néraudeau (2008).

It was assigned to Goniasteridae by Spencer and Wright (1966); and to Valvatida by Breton and Néraudeau (2008).
