Aturoidea was named by Vredenburg (1925) [Sepkoski's age data: K Sn T Eo Sepkoski's reference number: 524].

It was assigned to Nautiloidea by Glenister et al. (1956); to Hercoglossidae by Teichert et al. (1964), Shimansky (1975); and to Nautilida by Sepkoski (2002).
