Taxonomy
Temnocheilus was named by M'Coy (1844) [Sepkoski's age data: C Vise-u P Tatr Sepkoski's reference number: 524]. It is the type genus of Temnocheilidae.

It was reranked as Nautilus (Temnocheilus) by M'Coy (1844), Meek and Worthen (1873); it was reranked as Nautilus (Temnochilus) by Meek and Worthen (1870).

It was assigned to Nautilus by M'Coy (1844), Meek and Worthen (1870), Meek and Worthen (1873); to Gyroceratinae by von Mojsisovics (1882); to Tainoceratidae by Frech (1905), Hoare (1961); to Koninckioceratidae by Teichert et al.
