Myrmecolacidae was named by Saunders (1872). It is extant. Its type is Myrmecolax.
It was assigned to Stylopidia by Kinzelbach and Lutz (1985); to Strepsiptera by Carpenter (1992); to Stylopiformia by Pohl and Beutel (2005) and Kathirithamby and Engel (2014); and to Stylopoidea by Kinzelbach (1990), Kinzelbach and Pohl (1994) and Engel (2016).
