Polycentropus was named by Curtis (1835). It is extant. It is the type genus of Polycentropodidae, Polycentropinae.
It was assigned to Hydrophilidae by Scudder (1890); to Polycentropodidae by Carpenter (1992), Chamorro and Holzenthal (2011); and to Polycentropodinae by Melnitsky and Ivanov (2016).
