Palaeohelicopsyche was named by Ulmer (1912).

It was assigned to Helicopsychinae by Ulmer (1912); and to Helicopsychidae by Carpenter (1992), Wichard et al. (2009), Wichard (2013), Melnitsky et al. (2024), Wichard and Pankowski (2024).
