Ogmomyia was named by Ulmer (1912). It is the type genus of Ogmomyiidae.

It was assigned to Trichoptera by Ulmer (1912), Carpenter (1992); to Helicopsychidae by Wichard et al. (2009); and to Ogmomyiidae by Wichard (2013).
