Prionodon was named by Horsfield (1822). It is extant. It is the type genus of Prionodontina. It was considered monophyletic by Gaubert and Veron (2003).
It was assigned to Viverrinae by Mivart (1882); to Prionodontinae by Pocock (1933); to Feliformia by Gaubert et al. (2004); and to Prionodontidae by Gaubert and Veron (2003) and Hassanin et al. (2021).
