Prionastrea bernardiana was named by d'Orbigny (1850). Its type specimen is lectotype MNHN.F.R53023, a partial skeleton, and it is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Isastraea bernardana by Milne-Edwards and Haime (1857); it was recombined as Isastrea bernardiana by Lathuilière (1989), Pandey and Fürsich (2003), Lathuilière et al. (2023).
