Limnophila was named by Macquart (1834). It is extant. Its type is Limnophila montana. It is the type genus of Limnophilinae.
It was assigned to Tipulidae by Aldrich (1905), Carpenter (1992); to Limoniidae by Evenhuis (1994); and to Limnophilinae by Ribeiro (2008), Krzemiński (2019).
