Thaumastoptera was named by Mik (1866). It is extant. Its type is Thaumastoptera calceata.

It was assigned to Tipulidae by Carpenter (1992); to Limoniidae by Evenhuis (1994) and Podenas (2000); and to Limoniinae by Kania (2015) and Krzemiński (2019).
