Johannsenomyia was named by Malloch (1915). It is extant. It is the type genus of Johannsenomyidae.
It was assigned to Ceratopogonidae by Carpenter (1992); to Sphaeromiini by Borkent and Wirth (1997); to Culicidae by Park and Downing (2001); and to Johannsenomyiini by Borkent and Dominiak (2020).
