Hesperinus was named by Walker (1848). It is extant. It is the type genus of Hesperinidae.
It was assigned to Bolitophilinae by Johannsen (1909); to Bibionidae by Aldrich (1905), Carpenter (1992); to Hesperinidae by Skartveit (2009); and to Hesperininae by Skartveit and Ansorge (2020), Skartveit and Wedmann (2021).
