Taxonomy

Goniastrea canalis was named by Vaughan (1919). Its type locality is Vaughn Station 601 - Empire [Emperador Limestone], which is in an Aquitanian reef, buildup or bioherm limestone in the Culebra Formation of Panama.

Synonyms

Favites yborensis was named by Weisbord (1973). It is not extant. Its type locality is Ballast Point, Silex Bed [Tampa Limestone], which is in a Chattian/Aquitanian shallow subtidal limestone in the Arcadia Formation of Florida.

It was synonymized subjectively with Goniastrea canalis by Flórez et al. (2018).
