Athalia was named by Leach (1817). It is extant. It is the type genus of Athaliinae.
It was assigned to Tenthredinidae by Carpenter (1992); to Athaliini by Wappler et al. (2005); to Allantinae by Taeger et al. (2010); and to Athaliidae by Niu et al. (2022).
