Nortonella was named by Rohwer (1908). Its type is Nortonella typica.
It was assigned to Tenthredinidae by Rohwer (1908) and Carpenter (1992); and to Tenthredininae by Taeger et al. (2010) and Vilhelmsen and Engel (2012).
